Laboring in the Lord

" 'Why spend money
on what is not bread,
and your labor
on what does not satisfy?
Listen, listen to me,
and eat what is good,
and your soul will delight
in the richest of fare.' "

(Isaiah 55:2)

Happy Labor Day, precious friends, and welcome to a fresh 40-day journey with the Lord. Whether you've feasted with us before, have fasted on your own, or are submitting to this life-changing experience for the first time, we welcome you!

I find it so exciting and encouraging that, although we are all scattered throughout the world, we can unite through the wonders of technology. It is no coincidence that you are here; the Lord has divinely drawn us together for such a time as this, and by sharing our individual joys, sorrows, prayers, and praises, we can support and encourage one another through this wondrous time. I encourage you, as the Lord leads, to contribute to each day's reflection by posting your comments and insights.

Today's reflection Scripture, Isaiah 55:2, reminds us that our labor produces no lasting fruit, apart from Him. That Truth is significantly explored in the entire book of Ecclesiastes. "... without Him, who can eat or find enjoyment?" (Ecclesiastes 2:25). In John 15:5, Jesus further expounds the point: " 'I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing.' "

Today holds so much promise. It's a new beginning! Let us concentrate our efforts on only that in which the Lord directs us.

Precious Father, I pray Your blessings upon these faithful brothers and sisters in Christ. I praise You for their willing hearts, their submissive spirits, and their earnest desire to know You more. Protect them, Lord, from enemy attacks, and draw them closer to You. I pray, Lord, that You will "satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love ..." and "... establish the work of our hands" (Psalm 91:14, 17). This morning, Lord, we also remember those in the path of Hurricane Gustav. May all trust in and rely upon You during this storm, and, through this trial, may those who don't yet know You find their strength and salvation in You. I pray in the precious name of Jesus--Your perfect Son and my perfect Savior. Amen.

"... Always give yourselves fully
to the work of the Lord,
because you know
that your labor in the Lord
is not in vain."

(1 Corinthians 15:58)

(In addition to your comments and insights, feel free to ask any questions that you may have about fasting. You can leave your comments anonymously, if you prefer. If you have a question, I assure you that many others are wondering the same thing! We'll submit them to the Lord as they are received, and I'll share the answers He lays upon my heart. You're also welcome to share your own experiences with each other through the comment threads.)
